 Please accept my heartiest congratulations on the reopening of the Teatro alla Scala at the end of its restoration and refurbishment works on the 7th of December 2004. It is wonderful and gratifying that such an eminent and historic institution can continue the two hundred years of exceptional cultural and artistic activities for music and balletthat have left such a lasting impression on Europe and all the world.
I fully agree with the Amici della Scala that a lively cultural solidarity among us is essential to counter the difficulties facing the world today. I hope that the Bibliotheca Alexandrina which is also a "beacon" for culture and tolerance in the world can join with the Teatro alla Scala to match their exceptional heritage and bring peace and cooperation among peoples through their efforts in the cultural fields.
