On the 16th of May 1998, at Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice, the “Mecenate Award” ceremony, with a concert played by Marco Rizzi and Alessandro Maffei, was held. The first-prize winner was American, Lawrence Dow Lovett, a patron active for years in the world of music and the arts in New York (Metropolitan Opera House, P. Morgan Library, Lincoln Center) as well as President of the Venetian office of the international association “SaveVenice”. During the award ceremony, Lawrence Dow Lovett was also given the insignia of Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. On this occasion, the donation sum that was necessary for the restoration of the wonderful high altar of the San Rocco church, one of the major wood-carving masterpieces of 18th century Europe, was also declared.
